‘STARTBOX’ IS A BENEFICIAL PROGRAMME
THE Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership (SSRP) and the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) teamed up to deliver ‘StartBox’ for females.
This is a non-contact boxing programme for young girls and teenage girls aged 11-17 years. Those taking part can, according to the organisers, “get together, form new relationships, get fit, have fun, and learn the art of boxing”.
SSRP’s Senior Community Sport Development Officer Diane Middleton-Cox and Sligo Boxing Development Officer Maeve Clarke joined forces to collaborate on developing Sligo’s first community StartBox programme, with support from Ballymote Boxing Club coach Dino Dallet and Foróige Youth Centre.
Maeve Clarke stated: “Over six weeks the girls who signed up for the programme worked hard to get fit, built relations and together learned the fundamental skills of boxing.
“Due to the success of this programme and all teenage girls eager to continue learning and participating in the sport, we are already planning another StartBox for girls in 2024.
“In addition, we’re also hoping to introduce an over-18 community programme to create more pathways for girls to participate in boxing and create as many opportunities as we can for females in this sport.”
She added: “The StartBox programme is also currently being rolled out and coached by the Sligo boxing coaches, across primary schools, secondary schools and schools of further education for both girls and boys. We are expecting to see a rise in the level of participation, especially females in 2024.” Diane Middleton-Cox of SSRP stated: “It was great to see so many girls breaking down barriers by taking up this sport that has traditionally been associated with boys and men.
“Not only does boxing provide an excellent workout, but it also teaches self-defense skills and builds confidence. The sport requires a great deal of focus and discipline, which can be beneficial in other areas of life.
“Additionally, the sense of camaraderie among these boxers can lead to lifelong friendships and a supportive community.”
