Storm Fergus puts a halt on Sligo-Leitrim

Vital Oscar Traynor Cup fixture against Galway is postponed

-

SLIGO-LEITRIM’S bid to qualify for the national stages of this season’s FAI Oscar Traynor Inter-League Cup has been put on hold.

Their scheduled Connacht region group game against Galway, the result of which would decide their progress to the knockout phase of the competition, was postponed.

Because of Storm Fergus, which followed last Saturday’s Storm Elin, Met Eireann issued an orange weather warning for counties Galway, Mayo and Roscommon.

On foot of this, the Connacht Football Association called off all games and so the Oscar Traynor Cup game didn’t go ahead at MacSharry Park.

It is anticipated that the John Loftus-managed Sligo-Leitrim will take on Galway early next month.

The planned fixture for Sligo-Leitrim meant that only one game was due to take place in the Sligo Southern Hotel Super League – the clash of Cliffoney Celtic and Glenview Stars. But it was postponed.

The top tier standings remain the same – Cartron United and Gurteen Celtic are first and second respectively, both on 19 points, with Cartron top by virtue of a superior goal difference.

IN the Sligo Pallets Premier League, impressive leaders Aughanagh Celtic recorded their 11th win – from 12 games – on Sunday last. The title challengers won 2-0 at home against second-placed Ballygawley Celtic. Both of Aughanagh’s goals came in the first-half – Michael Barry and Dylan McDermott were the scorers.

It was a tough day for Ballygawley who were issued with four red cards – players Ross McLoughlin (two bookings), Ryan Walsh and John Paul Henry (two bookings) were dimissed as was coach Thomas Walsh.

This result means that Aughanagh hold a nine-point lead over Ballygawley. Merville United, in third, are 11 points off the leaders but have played two games fewer.

Benbulben FC moved up one place in the standings – from fifth to fourth – following their 9-2 hammering of Valley Rovers at MacSharry Park. Sean Kiernan netted four times for the north Sligo side and Daniel Watters scored twice, with Fola Ayorinde, Ray Hamilton and Rowan Connolly also scoring.

The Valley Rovers goals came from Arek Oberwan and Jacek Ozdobinski.

Benbulben have won seven of their 14 games in this season’s second tier and they are currently the Sligo Pallets Premier League’s top scorers with 47 goals.

Second from bottom Kilglass-Enniscrone United received a 3-0 walkover win against bottom of the table Carrick Town. Coolaney United were 6-2 winners away to Dromahair FC. The visitors were well on their way to victory at half-time as they led 4-0. Jack Somers supplied a hattrick for the winners. Their other goalscorers were Sean Stenson, Wayne Conway and Enda Gallagher. The home side’s two goals came in the last 10 minutes courtesy of Stephen Mullan and Alan Kavanagh. The game between Strand Celtic Reserves and Calry Bohs Reserves took place at The Showgrounds (astroturf pitch) on Friday last. This thriller produced nine goals as Calry Bohs Reserves won 5-4.

AST weekend’s schedule of games in the Sligo Bay Lobsters Women’s League produced a rare result as leaders Glenview Stars’ 100% record was ended.

They are still unbeaten but, after eight successive wins, they experienced a first draw of the season when held 1-1 by Yeats United at MacSharry Park on Saturday morning.

Gemma McDonagh’s goal – from a Sarah O’Boyle assist – put Glenview a goal up with 67 minutes on the clock. But Yeats United dug deep and they were rewarded when Jemma Shaughnessy equalised after 80 minutes. Glenview are four points clear of second-placed Gurteen Celtic, who weren’t in action last weekend.

Arrow Harps remain in third – six points adrift of the leaders – and they lost 7-2 to KilglassEnniscrone United at MacSharry Park on Saturday last.

Kilglass-Enniscrone United are now level on points with Arrow Harps (19) but are one place below them, fourth, because Arrow Harps have a better goal difference.

The winners held a 2-1 advantage at half-time and scored a further five goals in the second-half. The goalscorers for Kilglass-Enniscrone nited were Joanne McDonnell, who netted a hat-trick, Sarah Feeney (2), ex-Sligo Rovers player Orna O’Dowd and Tara Hastings. On target for Arrow Harps, who scored once in each half, were Orla Devaney and Louise Merrick.

Two games were played last Friday. Valley Rovers defeated Ballisodare United 3-0 at MacSharry Park.

Three players were on the scoresheet for Valley Rovers – Megan Davey, Leah Mullaney and Shauna Kelly.

Meanwhile, a goal in the last five minutes from Emily Burns was the difference for Calry Bohs, who were 1-0 winners over Manor Rangers at Ballisodare United’s astroturf pitch. This was a third win from nine games for Calry Bohs.
