Sligo’s U-20 and senior teams get their medals
LAST Friday night Sligo GAA honoured its two winning inter-county Gaelic football teams from this year, the U-20s and seniors, at a gala banquet hosted by the Radisson Blue Hotel & Spa. The Sligo U-20 team, managed by Paul Henry, retained the Connacht GAA U-20 Football Championship and were also runners-up in the EirGrid GAA Football All-Ireland U-20 Championship.
Sligo’s U-20 team captain Canice Mulligan was named Connacht’s best player at U-20 level for 2023 and he was also chosen, along with his Sligo teammates Daire O’Boyle, Dylan Walsh, Rossa Sloyan and Luke Marren on the EirGrid ‘20 Under 20’ selection (the best 20 players from this year’s U-20 championship). Marren was also the competition’s top scorer. The Sligo senior team, with Tony McEntee in charge, won Division Four of the Allianz Football League and with it promotion to Division Three for 2024 and they were also Connacht GAA Senior Football Championship finalists.

Medals were presented to both of these successful squads, with the U-20 players also getting All-Ireland runners-up medals. There were also presentations made to Niall Murphy and Keelan Cawley to mark the fact that they’ve each made 100 appearaces for
Sligo at senior level. Murphy and Cawley also won the Owen B Hunt Cup with Coolera-Strandhill this year.
Special guests on the night included Tubbercurry’s John Murphy (Connacht GAA president), John Prenty (Connacht GAA secretary) as well as Sligo GAA legends Mickey Kearins (Sligo GAA president) and Barnes Murphy (Sligo GAA vice president).
Presentations were made to the main sponsor of Sligo GAA’s U-20 and senior teams, Abbvie, as well as associate sponsor ATU Sligo.
The MCs were Austin O’Callaghan (Ocean FM) and Cathal Mullaney, the chairperson of EnniscroneKilglass GAA Club who works for RTÉ.
