Fitz will be with Rovers in 2024

SLIGO Rovers have re-signed Will Fitzgerald for the 2024 season. The versatile winger, who scored one goal this year, albeit in a campaign disrupted by injury, first joined Rovers for the 2022 season.

A native of Raheen in Limerick city, the 24-year-old previously played for Limerick FC, Waterford FC and Derry City in the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division. He has also represente­d the Republic of Ireland at U-21 level.

Fitzgerald, who turns 25 next May, is looking forward to continuing his career with the Bit O’Red. All going well, next year will see him reach 100 appearance­s for the club.

He stated: “It is a great club, with even better people involved, and I know how much it means to the supporters and community to see it thriving.

“I’m loving my football here – ever since I first arrived [in Sligo] I’ve been made feel welcome by everyone in and around the club.”

one of his realible options for 2024. Russell said: “Will is a top profession­al who brings so much to the team in terms of his energy, workrate and quality.

“He has an excellent mentality and is exactly the type of character I want at the club.

“I’m excited to have him with us again as I feel he can take game to another level next season.” Fitzgerald’s re-signing for 2024 means that Rovers currently have – at the time of going to press, yesterday, Wednesday – 11 players in the senior men’s squad. One of these players, goalkeeper Luke McNicholas, is currently on loan with Wrexham in League Two of the English Football League. Next month McNicholas will either return to The Showground­s or he will be signed by Wrexham, with Rovers due a fee if the Welsh club decide to offer the Mayo native a permanent deal.

Meanwhile, winger Fabrice Hartmann’s loan from German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig continues until June 30, 2024.

WELL DONE: Sligo Rovers midfielder Niall Morahan, is presented with the club’s Senior Men’s Player of the Year award for 2023 by senior men’s team manager John Russell. Last week Morahan, who hails from Leitrim Village, signed a new contract that keeps him at The Showground­s for the 2024 campaign.
