Henry, told the Court that her client – since the age of three – has been diagnosed as being autistic, having Asperger’s and having depression, and acts like a six-year-old.

Due to his health issues, Sharples struggles to find employment. With that, he “undertook to do this – which was not the wisest decision”. Ms Henry did add that Tommy Sharples does exist but he is Richard’s own brother. She concluded by asking the Court for a probation and welfare report and that €1,000 of the money owed was ready to be re-paid. Judge Éiteáin Cunningham said: “This is very serious and only due to the facial recognition system that Mr Sharples was eventually caught.” The Judge ordered a probation and welfare report and adjourned the case until April 25.

A 20-year-old man who offered €1,000 to his assault victim has been told instead by Judge Éiteáin Cunningham to pay compensation of €3,000.

Calum Ayres of Lawne Park, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal, pleaded guilty to charges of assault and criminal damage at Sligo District Court. Sgt Derek Butler told the Court that on April 27, 2022, the injured party – following a night out – had invited a number back to their property in Ballinode, Co. Sligo.

The following morning, the injured party woke up at 9am to the sound of glass being broken. The defendant was seen by the injured party next to a broken television set and was told to leave.

Ayres then punched the injured party in the face – fracturing a nasal bone in the process.

The injured party got up from the floor only to be punched again.

The defendant was later arrested and made full admissions saying that he had no excuse for his behaviour. It was disclosed to the Court that the criminal damage on the television set came to €300.

Despite Ayres offering to pay a sum of €1000 compensation to the injured party, Judge Éiteáin Cunningham said: “This is a very serious matter. I’ve considered the victim impact statement made by the injured party and the level of compensation offered is not sufficient.

“In light of the injuries suffered, the compensation figure should be €3000.”
