HIQA inspections yield positive reports for two centres in Sligo

-

TWO centres in Sligo which were inspected by HIQA at the end of 2023 received positive reports.

The two centres were Harmony and Rosenheim designated centres.

Harmony designated centre is located on the outskirts of a large town in Co. Sligo and has good access to a wide range of facilities and amenities. The centre is a self-contained single storey house in close proximity to the town. The centre, run by the HSE, provides a full-time residential service for up to four people with disabilities, with additional capacity for two shared care beds. The centre had two spacious sitting rooms, a well equipped kitchen and dining area, an office space, laundry facilities and a room for activities. There are also adequate bathroom facilities in place. The inspector found that the centre provided the residents with ample living space and a comfortable and personalised home throughout.

The inspection took place on September 28, 2023 and the report was published on the HIQA website on January 10, 2024.

The inspector reviewed fifteen regulations during the inspection and the overall report returned full compliance.

The inspector noted that improvement actions were completed satisfactorily following the last inspection, and the centre was found to be well maintained, tidy and clean on the day of the inspection.

It was also noted by the inspector that there is a good level of compliance with regulations relating to governance and management of the centre.

Overall, from what the inspector observed and was told, and through reviews of various documents, it was found that the service aimed to ensure that the residents of Harmony are safe and supported, and receive high quality care and support.

The HSE will continue to work to ensure that a high quality service is maintained within Harmony designated centre.

Rosenheim Designated Centre is located near to Sligo town. The centre consists of two adjacent residential houses in a housing estate. Rosenheim provides residential services to adults with an intellectual disability. Each of the two houses provides accommodation for four residents. Both houses are two-story dwellings, and each have a communal kitchen and dining area, sitting-room, bathroom facilities and all residents have their own bedrooms. Transport arrangements are in place for residents to access community based activities and include shared transport between the houses, public buses and taxis. The houses are staffed with a mix of nursing staff and health care assistants, with night duty cover arrangements in the two houses to support residents with their needs.

The announced inspection took place on October 24, 2023 as part of the renewal of the registration of the centre and the report was published on the HIQA website on January 10, 2024.

The HIQA Inspectors found that the residents at Rosenheim are provided with a good quality, person-centred and rights based service where they are active participants in their community and in the running of their home.

Inspectors noted that the staff employed are familiar with residents’ support needs and attentive to their requirements. The inspectors also found that the staff recruited and trained to work in this centre, along with good governance arrangements in place, ensured that a safe and effective service is provided. This led to good outcomes for residents’ quality of life and for the care provided.

19 regulations were inspected on the day of inspection with seventeen regulations deemed to be fully compliant and two regulations deemed to be substantially compliant.

The following actions have been undertaken to ensure full regulatory compliance at the centre:

Training & Staff Development actions have been completed.

Upgrading works within the premises are to be completed by Quarter 2, 2024.
