Holders are beaten in ‘A’ decider at the Connacht GAA Air Dome in Bekan

-

SAINT Attracta’s Community School were beaten finalists in the Connacht LGFA Post Primary Schools Junior ‘A’ Championship decider that took place at the University of Galway Connacht GAA Air Dome, Bekan, on Wednesday of last week.

The Tubbercurry secondary school, last season’s champions, were beaten by Westport’s Sacred Heart School, 3-12 to 2-10, with the game switched from Swinford Amenity Park to the indoor setting of the Connacht GAA Air Dome. The change of venue was because of a frozen pitch in Swinford. Last week’s clash was a repeat of the 2023 final (held in Swinford) that saw St Attracta’s win by three points.

Holders St Attracta’s produced a defiant second-half, having trailed by 10 points at half-time, 2-8 to 0-4, and they outscored their opponents by five points in the second period, 2-6 to 1-4.

Team captain Ellen Giblin supplied 2-7 for the runners-up, with Lucy Henry, Grainne Cooke and Siofra McGuinness contributing a point each. The main scorers for Sacred Heart School were Katie Hughes and Larissa Kelly.

Eight members of the St Attracta’s squad were part of the Sligo LGFA panel that reached last year’s LGFA All-Ireland U-16 Championship ‘B’ final (a game they lost to Kerry).
