Signings boost for women’s team

-

THE Sligo Rovers senior women’s squad has been enhanced in recent days with two new signings and another re-signing from last year’s group.

A brilliant development is that Manorhamilton’s Muireann Devaney has rejoined the club. The 20-year-old from Co. Leitrim, who helped Athlone Town win the Sports Direct Women’s FAI Cup for the first time in 2023, returns to The Showgrounds where she played as an

U-17 player.

A member of Rovers’ U-17 women’s team for two seasons (2019 and 2020), she spent two productive years in Athlone where she worked with Tommy Hewitt, who is now the Rovers manager. A former Republic of Ireland women’s underage international, Devaney is also a noted Ladies Footballer.

Rovers boss Tommy Hewitt believes that Devaney merits further international recognition – this time at senior level.

“I think she’s the most underrated player in the league – I’ve always said that to her. I think by now she should be a senior international and hopefully with her performances now at Sligo that will happen,” he enthused.

Also coming back to Sligo is defender

Kelsey Munroe. The Mayo native was in the Rovers U-17 women’s team in

2018 before playing for Galway United and Athlone Town in the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division. She excelled for Athlone in 2022 when the midlands club were runners-up in the FAI Women’s Cup and the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division.

Tubbercurry Kerri ‘Pixie’ O’Hara has signed for a third season with the club’s senior women’s squad. A versatile, pacy competitor, O’Hara – who came through the Rovers’ academy – can play in a variety of roles.

Last year she captained and inspired the St Attracta’s Community School team that reached the FAI Schools FAI Schools Senior Girls National Cup final.
