Council asked to extend parking beyond two hours in “exceptional” circumstances

-

AN appeal to Sligo County Council to come up with a way in which people could park legally in Sligo for more than two hours in exceptional circumstances was made at a recent meeting of the Council.

Cllr Dónal Gilroy stressed he was not looking for free parking suggesting the tariff could be €5 after two hours.

He said in exceptional circumstances this facility to allow people to park for more than two hours in the centre of the town when the driver may have to attend an important medical or other appointment should be considered.

Martin Lydon, Chief Executive, warned they needed to be careful if they were to consider the idea as suggested.

“What are exceptional circumstances, how do you define that, what goes on the list and what doesn't,” he asked.

“I would hope if there were a bona fide case that common sense would prevail and we as a Council would look sympathetically, but we need to be careful if we go down this route, who is in, who is out,” he said.

Emer Concannon's written reply detailed all the car parks available locally.

Her reply stated “any requirements for parking for longer than two hours can be facilitated at locations where daily parking rates apply. These include: Market Place Car Park; St Annes Car Park; Connaughton Road Car Park; The Mall between Calry Lane and River Lane; Finisklin Road from Pirn Mill Road to Rathedmond Road; St Brigid's Place to boundary of meter parking on Mail Coach Road; Pirn Mill Road between Finisklin Road and Ballast Quay; Road through City Gate Apartments from Mail Coach Road to Cul de Sac end.
