JUNIOR SOCCER: Sligo-Leitrim & District Soccer League

-

DESPITE the ferocity of Storm Isha last Sunday, there were only three postponements in the Sligo-Leitrim & District Soccer League.

One of the games called off was in last Sunday’s Sligo Southern Hotel Super League as the scheduled clash of champions MCR FC and second-placed Cartron United was postponed.

Top flight leaders Gurteen Celtic recorded another win – they defeated Glenview Stars 2-0 at MacSharry Park. Shane O’Grady’s 17th minute finish put Gurteen a goal up and they doubled their advantage when Eoghan Nerney goaled after 75 minutes. This was Gurteen’s eighth win in 10 games.

Strand Celtic drew 1-1 at home with Ballymote Celtic, with the visitors securing a share of the spoils thanks to an 87th minute goal from Colm Duffy. Aaron O’Boyle’s first-half goal put Strand in front and they held this advantage until the last five minutes.

Also last Sunday, St John’s FC and Calry Bohs shared 10 goals in a 5-5 thriller at MacSharry Park. It was 3-3 at half-time. Eoin Nicholson’s goal gave Calry the lead and then St John’s replied with three goals – David Heffernan scored twice and Darragh McGoldrick also netted.

But Calry responded with goals from Eoin Stinchon and a second goal from Eoin Nicholson.

The sides couldn’t be separated in the second-half. Cian Oates put Calry back in front, 4-3, and then Darragh McGoldrick scored again to tie matters at 4-4.

St John’s edged ahead thanks to a goal from Andre Mills after 75 minutes but within two minutes Calry were level again when Benedict Nwani was on target.

Two Super League games took place on Saturday night. Former champions Carbury FC blitzed bottom of the table Real Tubber 8-0 under lights at MacSharry Park. Malachy Spratt scored a hat-trick, with Carbury’s other goals coming from Christopher Kelly (2), Cian Kilcoyne, Zach Gilligan and Mark Hannon. The winners were 2-0 ahead at half-time.

One goal was the difference in the clash of Manor Rangers and Cliffoney Celtic at the astroturf pitch in Ballisodare.

Manor Rangers won this tie – for their fourth win in 11 games – courtesy of Michael Mulholland’s 52nd minute goal from a Patrick Gilgunn assist.

IN the Sligo Pallets Premier League last weekend, two games fell foul of Storm Isha – leaders Aughanagh Celtic’s hosting of Coolaney United and Ballygawley Celtic’s home fixture against Calry Bohs Reserves.

With Aughanagh Celtic not playing there was an opportunity for second-placed Merville United to cut the gap and that’s what they did when beating Benbulben FC 2-0 at home last Sunday.

Goals from Niall Feehily and Tyler Stallard – his 21st of an outstanding campaign – set up an 11th win of the season for Merville, who are now only five points behind Aughanagh Celtic, who have a game in hand.

Ballisodare United moved up to third place in the standings following their 4-0 home hammering of Carrick Town.

The winners found the onion bag four times in the second-half – Stephen Fallon scored twice and their other goals came from Paul Scanlon and Adam Grace.

Two Premier League games took place last Saturday night. Dromahair FC won 3-1 against Valley Rovers at Cleveragh’s astroturf pitch.

The winners scored through Stephen Mullan,
