SCHOOLS ROUND-UP
Performing at the Christmas Concert in Summerhill.
SUMMERHILL COLLEGE
CHRISTMAS CONCERT:
Coinciding with the college’s annual Christmas jumper day, Summerhill’s Christmas concert was held on December 20th. The proceeds of the concert supported the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, Sligo Social Services, and UNICEF’s Gaza appeal, alongside the earnings of the Christmas raffle and the bucket collection on behalf of Christmas jumper day. A select number of TY students catered guests with refreshments during the concert’s fifteen minute intermission, and the winners of Summerhill’s Christmas raffle were also announced at the
concert.
The theme of Summerhill’s Christmas Concert was “peace on Earth,” which, according to MC Jamie O’Hara, “serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of fostering harmony, goodwill, and understanding in our lives and communities.” Barry McNamara also acted as the concert’s MC alongside Jamie.
With acts from some of the college’s most talented musicians, the concert creatively told the story of Christ’s nativity, according to the gospels of St. Luke and St. Matthew.
The highlights of the concert included
- “O Holy Night,” performed by Connor Cannon, Ciarán Davey,
Leo Tarrant, Noah Tarrant, Harry
Killoran, Aaron Daly, and Jericho Delos Santos. The song was also translated into sign language by staff member, Seán Mooney.
- The “Kesh Jig”, performed by the concert’s traditional music group (John Joe Norton, Noel White, Zach Loughlin, Mr. Donagher, Samuel Reagan, Ms. Tierney, and Ms. McDermott)
- U2’s “One,” performed by Sam Reagan, Michael Saxa, Darragh O’Leefe, and Cal Halpi.
- The “Christmas Can Can,” performed by Andrew Connell, Ben O’Loughlin, Calum Mulligan, Conor Nicholson, Darragh O’Keefe, Harry Kiloran, Jericho Delos Santos, Joseph Envoy, Michael Saxa, and Samuel Regan.
To conclude the Christmas
Concert, The Pogues’ “Fairytale of New York”, Shakin Stevens’ “Merry Christmas Everyone”, and Elton John and Ed Sheeran’s “Merry Christmas”, were performed by all musicians that performed at the concert.
Buddy Club recommenced after the Christmas break. Students completing the Pope John Paul 2 award continue to visit our Bishop Jones Centre every Wednesday afternoon to play games and activities.
BUDDY CLUB:
An early morning start led to a very enjoyable day for our students who traveled to the BT Young Scientist Competition in the RDS. Here they got the opportunity to view the many impressive projects competing in the competition as well as engage in many interactive activities.
Many thanks to the teachers who organised and accompanied the students.

GRANDPARENTS DAY CELEBRATION:
Thank you to all of our 1st year Grandparents who joined us in the college to celebrate mass for Grandparents Day. Our 1st year students led us in prayer and readings while our pope John Paul 2 students helped to set up the hall and provided refreshments afterwards while our wonderful school choir enhanced the prayerful atmosphere.
WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN
There were lots of fun, games and thoughtful insights at our gathering with TY students from Sligo Grammar School as part of our annual gathering to celebrate the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Many thanks to our Pope John Paul 2 Award students who attended the event and to Sligo Grammar School for hosting us.
UNITY: THE SHRINE OF BLESSED CARLO ACUTIS:
As part of Catholic Schools Week 2nd year students visited St.Anne’s Church to visit the Shrine of Blessed Carlo Acutis. This visit coincided with the 2nd years beginning their research on their CBA - A Person of Commitment. The students had a number of surprises including a treat, courtesy of Fr.Pat, who also spoke with the students about the inspiring life of Carlo Acutis.
ANNUAL DIOCESAN INTER-SCHOOLS QUIZ WIN:
A big well done to our three first year teams who competed at the recent Annual Diocesan Inter-Schools Quiz. Despite the high standards and intense competition David Graham, Zach O’Sullivan and Niall Gordon took first place in the quiz. Congratulations boys.
A Parents afternoon was recently hosted for LCA 1 and LCA2 where they were provided with important information regarding dates for upcoming assessments and tasks. If any parent/guardian still has any questions or queries regarding the next two terms please email or make contact through the main office.
Mock exams for LCA2 students will begin after midterm break - further information will be distributed to parents and students soon.
Work Experience has resumed for our LCA and TY students and we continue to catch up with them
