action against Clare last Sunday. He was one of two Sligo players to be sent off in the second-half of the fixture at Cusack Park. but that losing to Clare will make this task a lot more difficult.

“We are at a level where we feel we can be competing properly and, with respect to Clare, I thought we could come here and get a result.

“We have a long way to go after this defeat – last year we lost our first game [against Laois] and then we went nine games unbeaten.

“But now, after this performance, it is hard to see that happening. But there is a good fight in these players and we’ll see if it is still in them.”

The pressure increases on Sligo to get wins from their home fixtures and the first of the four games at Markievicz Park is this Sunday’s clash against Wicklow, the county that Sligo defeated in last year’s Division Four decider. “Wicklow are a strong outfit. This is a home game for us and one that we need to win. This is a challenge that we are looking forward to – we haven’t played at Markievicz Park since May of last year [a Sam Maguire Cup group game against Kildare].”

Meanwhile, McEntee reckoned that Drumcliffe-Rosses Point’s Eoghan Smith, who was making his Allianz Football League debut at centre-forward for Sligo, had a reasonable outing. “This was his first game and the selection was well-deserved because he has shown up well in pre-season games and he has done really well in training.”

Nathan Mullen, who missed last Sunday’s game as a precaution, is expected to be available and in contention to make the matchday squad for the Wicklow fixture.
