DRP GAA say ‘well done’ to Donnchadh

Drumcliffe-Rosses Point GAA Club have extended congratula­tions to one of their players, Donnchadh O’Brien, who made his Allianz Hurling League debut for the Sligo senior hurlers on Saturday last. O’Brien was a second-half substitute in the Division 3A game against Cavan at Markievicz Park. Sligo won by four points, 4-19 to 3-18.

The next day, Sunday, two Drumcliffe-Rosses Point players – Eoghan Smith and Cian Lally – scored for Sligo’s senior Gaelic footballer­s in their two-point defeat of Wicklow, 2-10 to 1-11, in an Allianz Football League Division Three second round game at Markievicz Park. Meanwhile the club has three players in the Sligo Ladies Football panel for this Sunday’s Lidl Ladies National Football League Division Three game against Down at Keash – the DRP trio are Sinead Regan, Rianne Smith and Isabella Henry.

involves last season’s SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division winners, Shamrock Rovers, and their Dublin rivals St Patrick’s Athletic, who reclaimed the Sports Direct Men’s FAI Cup. Riverstown’s Johnny Kenny, the former Sligo Rovers striker who joined Scottish giants Glasgow Celtic in 2022, is part of the Shamrock Rovers squad as he embarks on a second season-long loan with the winners of the last four top flight titles. Kenny, a Republic of Ireland U-21 internatio­nal, scored six times for Shamrock Rovers last year and was chosen as their Young Player of the Year for 2023.

CSSC masters win medals at Monaghan gala

Cassie McVeigh, who made a speedy recovery from a significan­t finger injury, broke six minutes when winning silver in the 400 metres freestyle

(her time was 5:51). She also secured gold in the 100 metres freestyle.

There was also gold joy for Elaina Sugrue, who won the 100 metres freestyle event in what was a competitiv­e category, as well as the 50 metres flystroke. Carley Quinn’s double gold came over 50 metres as she won the freestyle and backstroke events. Philip Newell won the 200 metres individual medley, a testing category that includes all four swim strokes. There was also gold for Shane O’Doherty, who was first in the 100 metres freestyle and the 400 metres freestyle (which is O’Doherty’s speciality).

Next month County Sligo

Swimming Club’s masters will be heading to the University of Limerick for the national long course championsh­ips.

Sligo have a home game in Energia AIL

Sligo Rugby Club senior men’s team return to Energia All-Ireland League action this Saturday when they welcome Cork side Dolphin to Hamilton Park (kick-off 2.30pm). Sligo are currently fourth in the Division 2B standings, which is the final play-off berth, with Dolphin second from bottom in the table.

Although Division 2B strugglers Dolphin have only won three of their 12 games, enduring nine losses, one of their victories was at Sligo’s expense – a one-point win, 25-24, when the sides met in Cork on November 18. Sligo are aiming for a third successive

win followings defeats of Skerries (29-5) and Belfast Harlequins (25-17).

Meanwhile, Sligo’s Bank of Ireland Connacht Senior Cup final against Athlone’s Buccaneers will go ahead at Hamilton Park on Saturday, March 9 (2pm). Sligo, who lost to Buccaneers in last season’s decider, were previously Connacht Senior Cup champions in 2019.

GOWA Sports link up with Sligo LGFA

GOWA Sports Ireland, a Sligo-based sportswear company, are the new kit suppliers for Sligo LGFA. The county senior team will wear their new GOWA jerseys for the first time this Sunday at the Lidl Ladies National Football League Division Three round three game against Down at Fr Kevin Brehony Park, Keash (1pm start).

Sligo Ladies Football legend Noelle Gormley, who has been an inspiratio­n for St Nathy’s and Sligo, and Louise Ward, the Kilkerrin Clonberne and Galway star, co-founded GOWA Sports Ireland in 2022. GOWA is an acronym for ‘Gaining Optimum Winning Attributes’.

Sligo LGFA chairperso­n Martin Seery welcomed the partnershi­p with GOWA Sports Ireland – this two-year deal will see GOWA supply playings kits, training kits and leisurewea­r. Fans will soon be able to order the new Sligo LGFA jersey as well as bespoke leisurewea­r.

Seery said: “I’m delighted to welcome our new kit suppliers, GOWA Sports Ireland. One half of the GOWA team is former Sligo player Noelle Gormley, who served the county for over 20 years with honour as a player – this is an opportunit­y for Sligo LGFA to repay, in a small way, the

contributi­on she has made to the county.

“Sligo LGFA are delighted to welcome Noelle and Louise and the GOWA Sports Ireland team on board and we wish them every success going forward.”

Sligo, meanwhile, are without a win after two rounds of the Lidl Ladies National Football League – they drew with Offaly and lost to Clare, both away fixtures. Sunday’s game at Keash is their first home game of this year’s campaign.

Elsewhere in Division Three this Sunday, leaders Clare host Roscommon, Louth are at home to Offaly and Antrim travel to Wexford.

Sligo-Leitrim Girls U-12 win a third game

The Sligo-Leitrim Schoolboys and Schoolgirl­s League Girls U-12 representa­tive have topped their section, Group

‘A’, in this season’s SFAI Girls U-12 Inter-League Championsh­ip. Their 4-0 win over Cavan-Monaghan in Cootehill last Saturday meant they completed the group phase with a 100% record, with this result adding to wins over Inishowen (3-0) and Donegal (6-1).

On target against CavanMonag­han were Emily Jane Norton, Tara Morris, Ornaith Guckian and Ava Niland. Sligo-Leitrim were 3-0 up at halftime. A developmen­t game followed between Sligo-Leitrim and Cavan-Monaghan, with this fixture mainly catering for U-11 players, with some of the U-12s from the main game also featuring. Cavan-Monagan won 2-1. Sligo-Leitrim now progress to the SFAI Girls U-12 Inter-League Championsh­ip Cup quarter-finals.

The Sligo-Leitrim Girls U-12 team management comprises of Brian Chambers, Clodagh O’Donnell, Amy Hyndman and Sandra Moran.
