ATU to ‘review and strengthen’ security measures to prevent similar incidents in future

IN a statement released on Tuesday evening gardaí said they responded to reports of a disturbanc­e in Ballytivna­n at around 2pm on Tuesday afternoon.

“The man was arrested by gardaí following the incident. He received medical attention at a Garda Station and has since been released from custody,” the statement added.

Gardaí confirmed that no injuries were reported to them and that their enquiries are ongoing.

In response to recordings that have appeared on social media following the incident gardaí have asked those who have images/video from the incident not to share it publicly.

They further asked that those with imagery would make it available to therm at Sligo Garda Station.

Anyone with images or informatio­n that may assist garda investigat­ions should contact 0719157016.

Meanwhile, ATU Sligo issued a statement following Tuesday's incident on campus where they also urged people who may have relevant video footage to share it with the gardaí.

In their statement they outline that support is available for anyone through student services for anyone who may have been impacted by the incident.

The ATU stated: “A member of the public gained unauthoris­ed access and threatened students.

“Thankfully, due to the swift response of our security team and the prompt interventi­on of the Gardai, the situation was brought under control without any injuries. We want to thank our security team, students, and staff for their quick response to this incident.

“The Gardaí responded promptly to the situation and have taken the suspect into custody at Sligo Garda station.

“We are cooperatin­g fully with the authoritie­s, and urge anyone with relevant video footage to assist the Gardai by sending it directly to 085 870 2510 and avoiding sharing it on social media.”

The ATU statement continued: “As an institutio­n, we take the safety and well-being of our students and staff very seriously.

“We are actively working to review and strengthen our security measures to prevent such incidents in the future.”

Offering support for those who may have been impacted by the incident the ATU adds: “For anyone affected by this incident, support is available through our student services.
