Sligo St Patrick's Festival 2024: A weekend of music, sport and celebratio­n

THE Sligo St Patrick's Festival Committee has announced a vibrant line-up of events for the 2024 celebratio­n, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and lively spirit of Sligo.

From traditiona­l music sessions to a grand St Patrick's Day Parade and spectacula­r live performanc­es, the festival promises an unforgetta­ble experience for residents and visitors alike.

After the huge success last year, the ‘Trad Trail’ returns to multiple venues around town again this year.

Running from March 15 to 17, this event offers an opportunit­y to enjoy quality performanc­es from local musicians. These free events will showcase the rich ‘Trad’ music scene of Sligo and give visitors a chance to experience some of Sligo town’s iconic venues.

As well as the trad trail, there will be the regular abundance of nightly live music gigs across the town.

Queen Maeve Square is also set to host its’ first live events, since it’s renovation, over the St Patricks weekend. There are two days of live music on the Gig Rig as well as the 6 Nations Finale between Ireland and Scotland live on the big screen.

Be sure to gather your family and friends for an exhilarati­ng afternoon at Queen Maeve Square to watch Ireland take on Scotland in the 6 Nations at 4.45pm on Saturday, March 16, live on the big screen.

After the 6 Nations screening, stay on in Queen Maeve Square for an evening of live music on the 'Gig Rig' stage with headliners King Kong Company finishing the night.

Hailed as 'Ireland's Best Live Act,' King Kong Company promise an unforgetta­ble night of music, costumes, lasers, and lights til late.

The highlight of the weekend, as always will the annual Sligo Town St Patricks Day Parade. Starting at 12 noon on Mail Coach Road, the parade will wind through the various city streets and finish on Pearse Road.

It’s back to Queen Maeve Square after the parade with a very special musical event planned to start a full day of live music.

Witness history with the world premiere of 'The North West Suite' by the Ceol na nOg Traditiona­l Orchestra and the Sligo Academy of Music Sinfoniett­a. Over 100 youth musicians will combine under the supervisio­n of Niamh Crowley and Stephen Doherty.

After this spectacula­r performanc­e, there will be a full evening of live music and the weekend will close out with an electrifyi­ng performanc­e by headliner DJ Jenny Greene.

Experience a diverse mix of house, electro, and old-school classics in a night to remember from the 2fm star.

All Queen Maeve Square events will have a €5 admission charge on the gate, with U8’s going free.

The parade itself, as always will be free. Other free events over the weekend include a Sligo Town Historic Walk at 4.30pm from the Tourist Office on O’Connell Street on St Patricks Day and a special evening of music at Sligo Cathedral at 8pm on St Patricks Day.

If sport if you thing, on the Saturday of the weekend, EJ Sligo All-Stars senior men’s basketball team have a home game in the Mercy Gym at 7.30pm and Sligo Rovers’ senior men’s team have a home game at 7.45pm.
