Cadden’s team finish fifth at World Indoors

The Athletics Ireland women’s 4x400 metres squad, which including Sligo AC’s Lauren Cadden, finished fifth in the final at last weekend’s World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow.

Last Sunday morning saw the Irish team reach the decider thanks to a time of 3:28.45 – a national record – in heat one. This time was sufficient to see them through as one of the fastest non-automatic qualifiers.

The final, which took place on Sunday night, saw the Irish quartet secure fifth place when they combined to clock 3:28.92. The event was won by the Netherlands (3:25.07), with teams from the USA (3:25.34) and Great Britain (3:26.36) taking the silver and bronze respectively. The same four Irish athletes ran in both the heats and final – Phil Healy, Sophie Becker, Roisin Harrison and Sharlene Mawdsley. This meant that Lauren Cadden and the other squad member, Rachel McCann, didn’t feature. Cadden is coached by Dermot McDermott.
