SLIGO Rovers boss John Russell has revealed his delight at seeing the senior men’s team get their first win of the season after three games without a victory.

Rovers were comfortable 5-0 winners over Dundalk on Monday in a performance where a switched-on Bit O’Red side were able to exploit a number of alarming weaknesses on show from the Lilywhites.

“I’m really pleased with our performance. After the last three games I felt it was coming, we showed very good signs and we were very clinical [against Dundalk] while managing the conditions.

“It was a complete performance in terms of possession, our shape and what we were doing in transitions.”

Russell said he is pleased with how the new players are settling into their surroundings to date and how they will benefit from not only winning their first game, but also claiming another clean sheet on what was an impressive night from a newlook defence.

“We are very happy with the business we done, it is important to get the players gelled in quickly, we showed signs in our opening games but you have to be winning.

“This is a relentless league so it’s important we that first win under our belt now, there is only so long you can be talking about moral victories and positives from defeats, we were hurting after Friday [the 1-0 home to Shels] so it is nice to be heading back down the road with these points.”

The howling wind and driving rain was not only endured by the players, but also by the hearty bunch of Rovers fans who made the trip.

Russell feels there is a growing rapport between the fans and players and hopes they can equally deliver
