Animal carcass ‘left to rot’ for almost a week on busy road

- By Matt Leslie

A DEAD cat’s corpse was left to rot for nearly a whole week on the outskirts of Sligo town.

The tragic feline’s body was prone on the side of the N16 road near the roundabout on Manorhamilton Road near the AbbVie pharmaceutical plant.

It is believed that the cat was there from last Wednesday and remained there until earlier this week on Tuesday when Sligo County Council arranged for the body to be collected after they had been contacted by The Weekender.

One reader, who asked not to be identified, told us: “I absolutely feel for that poor cat. It had obviously been knocked down by a vehicle but I can’t believe that the Council did not arrange for it to be removed.

“I contacted the Council on a number of occasions but got no response. If that cat wasn’t a stray, then some poor owner was probably looking for it without a clue as to what had happened.”

When The Weekender approached Sligo County Council, a spokeswoman said: “It has been arranged by Sligo County Council to remove the dead animal from the roundabout near the Abbvie plant, today (Tuesday, March 13).

“Where the animal was located is where the town and county boundary meet which caused a delay in dealing with same.

“All dead animals are removed and disposed of by Moran Dead animal collection Kilmacowen, Ballysadare, Sligo.”

The Weekender then asked the Council if the cat had been examined for an identity microchip and, if it had one, was its owner informed? We also approached the Council to clarify the “town and county boundary” explanation and why this had caused the “delay” in removing the cat’s body.

As we went to print, the Council had yet to offer a response.
