‘Too long in the tooth for shopliftin­g’

Sgt Derek Butler told the Court that on October 13, 2023 at 11am placed groceries up to the value of €35.05 in a yellow bag. Other groceries were placed elsewhere and they were paid for. The ones in the bag were not.

He added that the goods themselves were not recovered.

Defending solicitor, John Anderson, told the Court that his client put a turkey in her bag and forgot to pay for it.

He added that Feehily has since tried to pay back the money but is banned from the store who themselves refused to take the payment after Mr Anderson himself tried to hand over the money.

Judge Deirdre Gearty told Feehily to pay to money to the Sligo Family Resource Centre.

A 63-year-old man was told by his own solicitor that he was too old to be stealing from shops.

James Sweeney of Woodwview, Dalton Terrace, Ballaghade­rreen,

Co. Roscommon, pleaded guilty at Sligo District Court to a charge of theft from the Aldi store on Cranmore Road, Cranmore, Sligo.

Sgt Derek Butler told the Court that on December 3, 2022 between 6pm to 6.30pm, the defendant stole a number of items to the value of €52.19. The items were not recovered.

It was disclosed to the Court that Sweeney had 44 previous conviction­s.

Defending solicitor, Tom MacSharry, told the Court that his client is very sorry for the offence and had brought the €52.19 with him to Court to pay for the goods and added that he himself has told Sweeney that he's “a little too old in the tooth for this (stealing)”.

Judge Deirdre Gearty told Sweeney to pay the money to a charity of the Garda's choosing and sentenced him to three months in prison to be suspended for 12 months. A bail bond was set at €250.

Fine for motorist who was over legal speed limit

A Sligo woman has been fined for going over the legal speed limit.

Shauna Foy of Glendallon, Ballytivna­n, Sligo, was charged with driving with excess speed.

The Court heard that on August 7, 2023 at 10.53am on Pearse Road, Sligo, Foy was caught driving at 60kph in a 50kph zone.

A fixed penalty notice was issued but not paid.

Insurance charge dropped in district court

A man charged with driving without insurance had his case dismissed.

David Crocock of Kilmacowen, Ballisodar­e, was charged in relation to an incident on September 11, 2023.

Sgt Derek Butler told the Court that at 4.01pm, a Volkswagen Golf car – driven by the defendant – was stopped at Castle Street, Sligo.

A check revealed he had no insurance on the vehicle. Crocock said he had insurance and was told to produce his insurance certificat­e at a Garda station within 10 days. He failed to do so.

Defending solicitor, Mark Mullaney, told the Court that his client had allowed the insurance to lapse and has since taken out a new policy.

He added that Crocock had to pay €185 to get his vehicle back after the Garda had seized it.

Judge Deirdre Gearty struck the case out. resulted in a large fine and a fouryear driving ban.

Michael Queenan of Cabra, Rathlee via Easkey, failed to appear at Sligo District Court to answer charges of driving without insurance, driving without a licence and failure to produce a driver's licence.

The Court heard that at 10am on November 14, 2022, a vehicle was stopped by Garda on the N59 at Rathglass.

There were no discs on the windscreen. The driver – Queenan – insisted that despite this, he was insured and was told to produce his insurance certificat­e at a Garda station within 10 days.

He failed to do so.

Officers then attended the defendant's home where he was cautioned. He produced an old driver's licence and admitted he didn't have a current licence as well as an up to date insurance certificat­e.

It was disclosed to the Court that Queenan had two previous conviction­s.

Judge Deirdre Gearty handed out fines totalling €1000 and disqualifi­ed Queenan from driving for four years.

A man who drove with cannabis in his bloodstrea­m has been banned from driving for a year.

Matthew Crossthwai­te of Cuilmore, Gurteen, pleaded guilty to a charge of driving under the influence of drugs (cannabis).

Sgt Derek Butler told the Court that at 6.35pm on March 29, 2022, Garda stopped a vehicle at Cloonloo, Gurteen.

A drugs test was administer­ed on the driver – Crossthwai­te – which gave a reading of 22.2mg of cannabis.

Judge Deirdre Gearty banned Crossthwai­te from driving for a year and fined him €200.

Motorist receives three-year driving ban

A woman has been banned from driving for three years.

Geraldine O'Brien of Rathbarron, Coolaney, pleaded guilty at Sligo District Court to driving with excess alcohol and driving without due care and attention.

Sgt Derek Butler told the Court that at 11.51pm on November 19, 2022, a white Nissan Duke vehicle was seen by Garda at Chapel Street, Sligo, being driven erraticall­y.

The vehicle was stopped and the driver – O'Brien – was taken to the station where a urine test gave a reading of 67mg per 100ml.

Judge Deirdre Gearty disqualifi­ed O'Brien from driving for three years as well as fining her €200.
