New Volvo EX30 is a car of firsts

- By Declan Glynn

THE new Volvo EX30 SUV is the Swedish brand's most affordable electric car yet and, like its Smart #1 sister model, it is based on the new electric SEA platform that was developed by parent company, Geely Auto.

For now, the EX30 is offered in Plus and Ultra trim levels, with the possibility of an entry-level Core trim joining the range later.

Key standard ‘Plus' equipment includes a 12.3-inch colour touchscreen display, climate control, Safe Space Technology, LED headlights with active high beam, door opening alert, adaptive cruise control, power tailgate, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, parking sensors, 18-inch 5-spoke aero wheels, and a Harman Kardon premium sound system. Upgrading to ‘Ultra' trim brings with it 20-inch wheels, a fixed panoramic sunroof, electric front seats, rear privacy glass, rear LED lights, a 360-degree camera with 3D view, and a 22kW on-board charger.

The EX30 is a car of firsts, as it is the smallest SUV Volvo has ever produced, it is the fastest accelerating car it has ever built, and it is also the greenest.

The EX30 can be specified with a 268bhp single motor (Standard Range) that powers the rear wheels, and has a range of up to 344km, or with two motors for a total output of 422bhp with all-wheel drive (AWD) as standard, and a range of up to 450km (Twin Motor Performance).

Also available is a Single Motor Extended Range variant, which provides a range of up to 476km. The single motor in the EX30 (Standard Range) is powered by a 49kWh battery, while the extended range variant is powered by a 64kWh power pack, providing the car with the ability to sprint from 0-100km/h in just 5.7-seconds and 5.3-seconds respectively.

The twin motor version is also powered by the larger battery, and it can complete the same task in a supercar-rivalling 3.6-seconds.

The 49kWh battery can be charged at a rate of up to 134kW, bringing it from 10-80% capacity in as little as 26 minutes, with the larger battery taking just 28 minutes at a charger that supports its 153kW maximum charging rate. Charing via a 7kW domestic wallbox will take between 9.5 and 11.5 hours to complete a 0-100% charge.

The EX30 features some familiar Volvo design cues, including headlights that resemble a Thor hammer when illuminated, and C-shaped rear lights.

However, while the fully-electric Volvo C40 and XC40 have closed front grilles, the EX30 doesn't have a front grille at all.

Instead, the panel at the front proudly displays the iconic Volvo emblem.

When it comes to safety, it is fair to say that Volvo is at the forefront of car safety innovations, so it is no surprise that the EX30 is packed with advanced safety and driver assistance systems as standard.

In addition, Volvo says it has reinforced the chassis and safety cage with high-strength steel to help offset the impacts of a possible crash.

Even the A and C pillars, alongside the roof, are strengthened and optimised for safety.

My Volvo EX30 Single Motor Extended Range ‘Ultra' review car looked striking in its Crystal White paint finish with its contrasting black roof and trim elements.

There is a confident feel of solidness to the ride quality, and the steering balance and turn-in are both good. Drivers can select between three firmness options for the steering weight and feel, and the instant torque available from the get-go provides the car with the ability to get up to, and maintain, motorway speeds with ease. In terms of regenerative braking, drivers can select a one-pedal driving mode, either via the steering wheel or the infotainment system, returning braking energy to the battery in the process.

The EX30 is a thoroughly engaging car in every respect, and its overall driving dynamics are excellent.

The cabin feels very well constructed, and the twin cup holders that slide out from the front centre armrest add an extra layer of practicality to the mix.

The new Volvo EX30 is a very impressive all-round fully-electric compact SUV that comes with the reassurance of Volvo's long-standing safety credentials.

Pricing starts at €38,600 (inclusive of current Government incentives – term's & condition's apply).
