No medals for Sligo crew in Tallaght

-

LAST Saturday was unusually quiet on the medals front for Sligo competitors at the 123.ie All-Ireland Schools Cross Country Championships that took place at Tymon Park in Tallaght.

The highest-placed Sligo runner was Mercy College student Lucie Cawley who was placed 11th in the Junior Girls race – she ran 9:54 for the 2,500 metres distance.

The only other Sligo student to make the top 20 was Connacht champion Darragh Mulrooney, representing Enniscrone’s Jesus & Mary Secondary School – he was 20th in the 6,000 metres. He clocked 20:20.

The biggest entry from Sligo was in the Minor Boys race – there were eight participants, seven from Summerhill College and one from Grange Post Primary School. North Sligo AC member Noah McAndrew (Grange Post Primary School) was the best of these in 74th place. Summerhill had five runners in the Junior Boys race – Ross Campbell, who was 41st overall, was the fastest of the Summerhill contingent.

A total of four Sligo secondary schools had athletes at the Dublin venue last Saturday – Summerhill College, Mercy College, Grange Post Primary School and Jesus & Mary Secondary School (Enniscrone).

A notable absentee was Francis Donoghue (Summerhill College and South Sligo AC), who won the Intermediate Boys title at last year’s 123.ie All-Ireland Schools Cross Country Championships.

The senior titles last Saturday went to students from Co. Down and Co. Dublin. Anna Gardiner (Assumption Grammar School, Ballyhinch, Co. Down) won the Senior Girls title – she completed the 3,500 metres distance in 12:59 – and the Senior Boys crown went to Cormac Dixon (Holy Family Community School, Rathcoole), who posted a time of 19:00 for the 6,000 metres course.
