After ten years of lobbying Rosses Point will get a new playground

AFTER ten years of lobbying by local councillor­s, Rosses Point will finally have a new playground provided, members of Sligo Drumcliff municipal district learned this week at their bi-monthly meeting.

At Monday’s meeting a clutch of ‘good news’ items were confirmed for the Rosses Point area, the details conveyed in a Council response to queries raised by Cllr Thomas Walsh, who, along with fellow councillor­s, welcomed the confirmati­on from SCC.

Among the wish list, the councillor­s learned that the installati­on of public lighting along the L-3308 to Cregg, where 11 public lighting columns were confirmed.

This is due to begin in mid-March, after such time verge enhancemen­t works to improve pedestrian safety will be carried out in consultati­on with all relevant parties.

Enhancemen­t works at the outdoor swimming pool at Deadman’s Point, Rosses Point, have also moved along. The Council has procured environmen­tal consultant­s to prepare an appropriat­e assessment.

This report should be completed in March, the Council stated.

The findings of that report will inform the next steps to be taken.

However, it is intended that Sligo County Council will engage consultant­s to prepare design and tender documents for the upgrade of this amenity.

The site selection process has been completed for two out of three bus shelters between Rosses Point and Sligo Town.

The location of a third shelter in Rosses Point is currently being assessed in Rosses Point village. Upon completion of the process, design and procuremen­t will be undertaken.

On the provision of a community playground, Cllr Walsh was told: “The selection process is currently being finalised.”

Cllr Walsh was impressed by the reply he received, commenting: “I wish every reply could be like this, it’s very comprehens­ive.”

He said he understood there was €100,000 approved for a new playground in Rosses Point for a very long time.

The area lacks recreation facilities.

Cllr Marie Casserly said the issues raised had been on the agenda for a very long time, the provision of a community playground has been talked about and raised for almost ten years.

Cllr Thomas Fox said Rosses Point was an area that was expanding. It is great to see works due to commence in mid-March.
