“We looked to tidy that up for the second-half and thankfully the scores went over.”

McDonagh, who hailed the effort of all 35 members of the squad, said that the campaign began last September when he and Katie Walsh got involved in the team management and set out several goals.

“We really believed that there was an All-Ireland in this group, they had been Connacht runners-up last year and we also had some good players coming through from the Junior team.

“Once we won the Connacht title we knew that we would be hard to stop – it was an excellent team from Claremorri­s [Mount St Michael Secondary School] that we defeated in the provincial final.”

There were objectives for the season, a gruelling process and a group of players willing to put in the effort. This week saw the end product.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better squad to work with,” Walsh added as the embraces and hugs continued at the Ballyforan venue.
