Glowing tributes to longest serving Sligo Traffic Warden Tony Fox as he retires

-

THE Mayor of Sligo led tributes this week to retiring Sligo Traffic Warden Tony Fox who was described as having the ability to do a difficult job using a common-sense approach in his dealings with motorists and commercial drivers.

Mr Fox is understood to be the longest serving traffic warden in Sligo, one of the original first three wardens to be appointed.

Cllr Declan Bree thanked Mr Fox for his loyal service to the Council for almost 30 years.

“In the period since Tony was appointed as a Traffic Warden, he has been an exemplary employee of the Council.

“I think we all appreciate that a Traffic Warden’s job is difficult, however it has to be said that Tony Fox was always a gentleman.

“While all motorists get upset if they see a Parking Ticket on their windscreen, I have to say that I never heard anyone criticise Tony for carrying out what was his job.

“Indeed, I recollect a number of businesspeople in the town centre talking about Tony’s common sense approach in his dealings with motorists and commercial drivers.

“On behalf of the

Council and on behalf of the people of this community I would like to extend our thanks to Tony and to wish him and his wife every good wish for the future and a happy retirement,” he said.

Cllr Rosaleen O’Grady said Mr Fox was a former neighbour and she knew him well. She wished him and his wife Geraldine well and that they would enjoy a healthy and fruitful retirement.

Cllr Arthur Gibbons praised Tony’s professional approach to the job and said he was always “well got by the people in Sligo”.

He added, “he was always helping people, way beyond the call of duty and he had a pleasant attitude and a great sense of humour. We will run into him in town I’m sure, but it will be strange to see him without that uniform on him.”

Cllr Tom MacSharry said it might take two or three people to replace him. “He took great pride in his work, but he had a great sense of fun too. He also had a great sense of pride in Sligo, and he had a great way dealing with people and had a great compassion for elderly people in particular.”
