John Paul White added to Sligo Live line-up

-

SLIGO Live has announced that four-time Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter John Paul White will play a very special concert on Friday, October 25 in The Hawk’s Well Theatre.

Tickets are priced at €29.50 plus service charge and will go on general sale today, Thursday online from www.sligolive.ie and in person or by phone (071) 91 61518 from the Hawk’s Well box office.

John Paul White, lives in Florence, Alabama, not far from the legendary Muscle Shoals studio. Noted for his outstanding velvet voice, he has cultivated a music career in Nashville over two decades, first as a songwriter, then half of The Civil Wars – a ground-breaking Americana duo with Joy Williams that won four Grammy Awards before disbanding in 2012.

Because The Civil Wars were so hard to categorize, White has earned a fanbase among indie rock listeners, folk audiences, Americana outlets and on Adult Orientated Music Radio which continues into his solo performances.

With his latest album, The Hurting Kind, John Paul White has crafted a stunning album that draws on the lush, orchestrated music made in Nashville in the early 1960s. Yet these songs retain a modern feel, whether he’s writing about overwhelming love, unravelling relationships, or fading memory of a loved one.

White responded to the question, “What will happen if people hear ‘The Hurting Kind’ and call it country? “Well that doesn’t scare me in the least,” he says. “As a matter of fact, it kind of thrills me.”

In 2015, he contributed a duet with Emmylou Harris on the song ‘Kyrie’, to the album ‘Mercyland’. Then in 2016, White released a solo ‘Simple Song’ for the album ‘Southern Family’ by Dave Cobb. In 2017, White guested on the song ‘It Ain't Over Yet’ with Rodney Crowell and Rosanne Cash. The track appeared on Crowell's album Close Ties. In 2023, White and his former The Civil Wars partner, Joy Williams individually participated in a re-recording of ‘Safe & Sound’ with Taylor Swift, credited under their individual names.

Tickets for this show on Friday October 25th will be available on-line from Thursday March 28th on Sligolive.ie and in person or by phone (071) 91 61518 from the Hawk’s Well box office from general sale at €29.50 plus €2.00 service charge.

Although initial demand has been very strong, some tickets remain for Knocknarea Arena shows Paul Brady Trio (also on October 25th) and on the following day, October 26th, The Bothy Band reunion of perhaps the most popular ever traditional ensemble, through the same outlets and from Ticketmaster. Act quickly to secure your ticket and avoid disappointment.

Stand-by for more tantalisingly tasty Sligo Live shows to be announced in the coming weeks and months for the Hawk’s Well and the Knocknarea Arena during the Festival period from October 24 to November 3.
