Tourlestra­ne’s Alan Dunne was the runner-up on 16:47. The first female finisher in the 5k was Caitlin Hughes (Swinford AC) with a time of 19:29 for ninth place overall.

5k road race in Grange on Good Friday

Tomorrow, Friday, North Sligo AC is hosting its annual Good Friday 5k run. This popular road race, which starts from the North Sligo Sports Centre, Grange, at 6pm, caters for runners, joggers and walkers. Registrati­on is at 5pm. Participan­ts can also register online through the North Sligo AC Facebook page or website, www.northsligo­ac. ie. This event is a fundraiser for Medecins Sans Frontieres Ireland, who are working in Gaza.

‘West’ golf is taking place at Rosses Point

The Connolly Motor Group West of Ireland Amateur Open Golf Championsh­ip starts tomorrow, Friday, at County Sligo Golf Club, Rosses Point, and continues until Tuesday next, April 2. The pre-tournament 18-hole qualifier took place yesterday, Wednesday, with 17 spots up for grabs in the main tournament. The 101st West of Ireland tournament has reverted to its usual format – two rounds of strokeplay (36 holes) followed by a matchplay format for the leading 64 players. For two years the ‘West’ was played using three rounds of strokeplay (54 holes) and then the top 16 going through to the matchplay stage. Last year’s competitio­n was won by James Claridge, who defeated County Sligo Golf Club’s Barry Anderson, who was the last local champion in 2017. This is the third successive year that the West of Ireland is sponsored by Connolly Motor Group which has 13 car dealership­s in Sligo, Ballina, Letterkenn­y and Galway.

Meanwhile, County Sligo GC is to embark on a redevelopm­ent of its course at

Rosses Point, with the world-famous links course to be improved and revamped in the coming years – there will be work done on certain greens and bunkers.

County champions Coolera-Strandhill have appointed a new management team. Con O’Meara and John McPartland Jnr, both former Coolera-Strandhill players, are taking over from last year’s successful joint-managers, Adrian McPartland (John’s brother) and Enda Mitchell, who guided the club to last year’s Sligo GAA Senior Football Championsh­ip – a first such title since 2005. John McParland Jnr has previously had a management spell with Owenmore Gaels and Con O’Meara was the ATU Sligo senior team manager this year. Meanwhile, others clubs have confirmed their management appointmen­ts for the year ahead – taking charge of Easkey will be John Feeney, with Michael Clarke taking charge of St Patrick’s. St Farnan’s will be managed by ex-Mayo player Ronan McGarrity, who also starred for Ballina Stephenite­s.

Kilrehill is set to participat­e in Belgrade

The Sligo U-20 hurlers are in action this coming Saturday afternoon in the quarter-final of the GAA Hurling All-Ireland U-20 ‘B’ Championsh­ip (Richie McElligott Cup) when they take on Roscommon at Markievicz Park (2pm start). The U-20 hurling team manager is Barry Keenan and his selectors are Mark Burke and Brian White. The team’s joint-captains are Lee Gilmartin (Western Gaels) and Jaime Walsh (Coolera-Strandhill).
