Max Mata was shortliste­d for POTM prize

Sligo Rovers striker Max Mata was one of six players shortliste­d for the SSE Airtricity-Soccer Writers Ireland Player of the Month award for March. The award went to Shelbourne winger Will Jarvis. The four other nominees were Joshua Honohan (Shamrock Rovers), Patrick Hoban (Derry City), Darragh Burns (Shamrock Rovers) and Paddy Barrett (Shelbourne).

Mata, currently on loan at The Showground­s from EFL League One side Shrewsbury Town, has so far netted four goals for Rovers this season. This is the New Zealand internatio­nal’s second spell with the Bit O’Red.

Rower Colsh competes at World Cup I

Ballymote’s Brian Colsh was on the Rowing Ireland selection for last weekend’s World Rowing Cup I event in Varese, Italy. Colsh, formerly of Sligo Rowing Club and now a member of University of Galway Boat Club, took part in the men’s single sculls category.

The Sligo man was third in his heat last Friday morning, clocking 7:06.81 for the 2,000 metres distance. Colsh then competed in the ‘C’ final the following day, Saturday, and was second – his time was 7:02.74. This placed his 14th from the 28 entrants in this section.

Excellent golf continues at Castle Dargan

Golf competitio­ns are ongoing at Castle Dargan Golf Club. Earlier this month, Sean Heslin scored a brilliant 40 points in the Callaway Open Series. The stableford that took place on Sunday, April 7, was won by Sean Creaven. Paul Mullen was the runner-up and Jim Mooney was third. The club’s 9-hole competitio­ns (midweek) have also commenced.
