Darragh Cummins’ 26th minute point – after a surge upfield from Eddie McGuinness – steadied Sligo who would outscore Galway, 0-3 to 0-2, over the next 10 minutes before half-time.

Patrick O’Connor kicked two more points, both well-struck efforts, and Alan McLoughlin landed a huge score from a Niall Murphy pass.

Sligo had outdone themselves but remained calm about it and they were good value for a 0-9 to 0-6 interval lead.

Galway had been out of sorts in that opening period and also out of luck in front of goal – Liam Ó Conghaile’s goal shot led to a fruitless goalmouth scramble, Jack McCabe sent an effort wide as did Cein Darcy.

When they finally got a goal effort on target – Dylan McHugh’s 21st minute shot – it was a shade too high and the ball flew over Sligo’s crossbar.

Galway, with six first-half wides compared to Sligo’s four, will curse that Liam Silke’s attempt at a fisted point came off the upright and went wide.

Sligo, in contrast, were effective, efficient and energetic. They had matched Galway in that first-half and would do so again for most of the second-half.

Still, it was significan­t when Damien Comer was summoned to alter this semi-final with 42 minutes played.

Within 60 seconds of his arrival he kicked a lovely point and his second point cut Sligo’s lead to a point, 0-11 to 0-10, in the 47th minute.

Sligo pointed in the opening five minutes of the second period through Niall Murphy, who converted a ‘mark’, and Mikey Gordon, who ran through and lofted the ball over after Paul McNamara started the move.

Following Comer’s brace, Sligo added two more points thanks to Alan McLoughlin and Sean Carrabine, who made hay from McLoughlin’s perceptive crossfield pass.
