The ladies are wet, wet, wet

If you want to avoid panda eyes and make-up overkill on holiday, says Sarah Caden, then get out your waterproofs

Make-up rules are different on holiday. Or they should be, anyway. There will always be those who paint themselves up as usual and then look completely overdone and try-hard in the bright sunlight, but you don’t want to be one of them. You want to look relaxed, refreshed and radiant, but, if you’re over 22, you might find that a tiny bit of assistance is required in achieving this. The problem with make-up on holiday, however, is that the conditions and the cosmetics aren’t the same as at home. You’re hot, you may be a little sweaty, you are smearing on sun cream and, more than likely, you’re taking a dip. This is a recipe for panda eyes and make-up slippage, unless you go waterproof. And waterproof make-up is much better than it used to be.

There was a time when it stayed on, even when you were ready to take it off, and it was limited to mascara. Now you can get almost any make-up in waterproof form and, with a good oil-based make-up remover, it will shift at day or night’s end, too. It’s make-up made for holidays, when a little goes a long way, but you don’t want it going a long way down your face.

Typically, what is appealing about waterproof mascara is also what is awful about it. Which is to say that you buy it hoping it will stay put in warmth and water, but then it won’t come off at all, at all. And after a couple of days of wear, incomplete removal and application of additional layers, you have clumps of dried-out, brittle lashes. No batting, for fear they’ll break. “This is a pleasing waterproof, that wasn’t flaky, clumpy or utterly impossible to remove,” said one panellist. “It looks like non-waterproof. Which is a compliment.”

BEST PLAIN PENCIL Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof in Ardoise, €24, Chanel counters nationwide

Chanel do a good waterproof pencil, in an impressive range of colours, and this was part of its spring 2015 releases. It’s a deep grey, which makes it a good holiday choice for black-eyeliner devotees. Black is too harsh in the sun, but this will give you the definition, as well as waterproof staying power. With any waterproof eye pencil, let your eye cream soak in before you apply it — otherwise it won’t set securely, as the emollients will melt it. “A strong colour that’s not too severe,” one panellist said. “I love the knacky parer in the lid, too.”

BEST WON’T-BUDGE BASE Mac Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation, €36.50, Brown Thomas and BT2

For a beach or swimming-pool holiday, only a few will want waterproof foundation. But then, city breaks or holiday day-trips might see you seeking something shift-proof. Or, just maybe, you need something that won’t melt down your face on a balmy holiday evening. This could be the answer, as it’s a stayer, but not at all drying or mask-like. “It promises a satin finish, and that’s what you get,” said a panellist. “You need a creamy or oily cleanser to get it off, but it’s worth it.”

BEST AQUAMARINE EYES Smashbox Always Sharp Waterproof Kohl Liner in Cabana, €20, Arnotts; selected pharmacies nationwide

Yes, another Smashbox. They do good waterproof, clearly. These pencils are self-sharpening, so you always get a clean line. You simply twist the lid anti- clockwise, before turning clockwise to remove it and, hey presto, a sharp nib. There is a good range of low-key to loud shades in the range, but we like this bright green for a holiday flash of colour. “Always Sharp is right, and totally stay-put,” a panellist said. “A find.”

BEST HOLIDAY LASHES Clarins Truly Waterproof Mascara in Aquatic Green, €26, Clarins counters nationwide

This is absolutely not as scary as it looks. It’s subtle enough, with the colour only popping out when it catches the light. For a little emerald flash, apply it, over a coat of black mascara, to the tips of your lashes. If you’re the type who likes a little bit of pool-side adornment, it’s ideal. “I love the colour of this. It’s not OTT, but it’s different, and I like that on holiday,” said a panellist.
