Leo makes a tweet of himself

It’s getting to the stage when someone close to the Taoiseach really needs to think about staging an intervention and wrestling his Twitter account away from him. It was bad enough a wee while ago when Leo started defending his Brexit policy online against some random Brit with about 20 followers. This week he went further, taking to social media to deny rumours on Facebook that he got a free meal at the Kylie Minogue concert, insisting it was only drinks and that he paid for them, adding: “I have the receipt to prove it too.”

Here’s hoping Varadkar doesn’t throw it away. Future historians would hate to miss a chance to study such an important document. And to think some people think Donald Trump’s tweeting is mortifying...

To be honest, there’s a much deeper issue at stake here — namely, shouldn’t wanting to go to a Kylie gig automatically bar any grown-up from being in charge of the country anyway? We’ve got to have some standards.
