Fat shaming — the new Atkins

Sunday Independent (Ireland) - Living - - FRONT PAGE - DONAL LYNCH

It’s January and you’ve tried all those other fad diets — but have you tried insults about your weight? That might have been what many of us wondered when Kelly Brook revealed that the thing that prompted her to lose a pile of weight was not just online trolls taunting her, and cruel paparazzi stalking her, but also her boyfriend calling her a balloon. For good measure her mother also told her she should stop eating.

Faced with this onslaught, a lesser woman might have crumbled or indeed doubled down on the cake and biccies — but Kelly harnessed all that negative energy into a jaw-dropping body transformation and a food supplement endorsement deal. And in an absolutely brilliant piece of poetic justice, she now has the boyfriend eating the food supplement stuff — and he “loves” it.

So there you have it, fat shaming is the new Atkins, and the fad of the moment — at least until someone comes up with a diet where a loved one literally slaps
