British Academy Film Awards 2012

9pm, BBC1 Just when you thought last night’s Iftas were enough glamour for one weekend, along comes this British awards ceremony, and it’s packed with stars. But we’re not interested in the likes of Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Meryl Streep, who are all set to be in attendance. No, for a change, there’s some home-grown talent in the running for major gongs, namely the brilliant Michael Fassbender, whose mum is a Co Antrim lass. He’s been nominated for the Leading Actor award for his role in Moneyball, while our own John Michael Mcdonagh is in the running for a Best Original Screenplay gong, for his work on The

Guard. Fingers crossed you win big, boys. Oh, and for those still desperate for more A-list action, tune in to RTE One at midnight for another chance to see the Iftas in all their glittering glory.

The Meaning of Life, with Gay Byrne

10.30pm, RTE One Gaybo rounds off his series of fascinating interviews with famous folk by meeting singer Mary Byrne. She’s the former checkout lady who shot to fame thanks to The X Factor, and here she gives Gay Byrne an insight into the love and faith which have given her life meaning

Live Six Nations Rugby

2.30pm, RTE Two After Ireland’s clash against France yesterday, today’s match between Wales and Scotland might feel, to some, like the bridesmaid following the bride. But don’t be fooled. The young Welsh home team are definitely the ones to watch this year, and with a Scottish team desperate to prove they’ve got what it takes to compete at this level, what at first seems like a humdrum encounter could, in fact, turn out to be a belter. Top Gear

8pm, BBC2 While English — and Irish — audiences can’t seem to get enough of this blokey programme, sometimes the American guests putting their driving skills to the test can look a bit bemused. Hopefully that won’t happen to this week’s Star in a Reasonably Priced Car, Hollywood heart-throb Ryan Reynolds. Film: PS I Love You

10pm, Channel 4 Cecelia Ahern’s lovely book gets the Hollywood treatment in this big-screen adaptation. Hilary Swank stars as a grief-stricken widow who, after the sudden death of her husband, stumbles on 10 inspiring and uplifting letters he wrote before he died. But will they help her move on? Gerard Butler co-stars.
