SUNDAY INDEPENDENT TO THE FORE IN NEWSPAPER AWARDS NOMINATIONS
SUNDAY INDEPENDENT journalists have received 12 nominations for the National Newspapers of Ireland awards for 2013.
In total, there were more than 800 entries from the country’s national and regional newspapers in 20 categories.
The Sunday Independent editorial team, led by Elaine Byrne and Gene Kerrigan, which broke the Lowry Tapes story is nominated for the prestigious Scoop of the Year award. The team is also nominated in the Campaign of the Year category, and Elaine Byrne is nominated separately in the News Analysis category.
The Sunday Independent Deputy Business Editor Tom Lyons and journalist Gavin Sheridan were among the INM journalists nominated for the Anglo Tapes story in two categories — Campaign of the Year and the Digital Award category.
Sunday Independent Political Correspondent Daniel McConnell received a nomination in the Political Journalist of the Year category, and was also nominated to win Scoop of the Year for his story on Luke “Ming” Flanagan’s penalty points. In sport, soccer writer Dion Fanning received two nominations — for Sports Reporter of the Year and Sports Columnist of the Year. Marie Crowe was also nominated for Sports Reporter of the Year and our rugby commentator, Neil Francis, was nominated for Sports Columnist of the Year. Barry Egan was nominated for the Showbiz Journalist of the Year. The winners of the 20 categories will be announced on November 7 and one category winner will be chosen as Journalist of the Year.
