Minister Murph’s long walk to lose himself

-

Government minister Eoghan Murphy has walked out. However Leo needn’t worry. Murphy is, in fact, off to Spain tomorrow to walk the Camino.

When he told fellow Minister Richard Bruton last week in the Dail that he was doing the Camino, he was asked: “Are you going to find yourself ?”

“No — I’m going to lose myself, actually,” was Murphy’s reply.

“I’ve done the Camino before. I did it a few years ago with my thengirlfriend,” Murphy, who is single, told me over a pint in Humphrey’s in Ranelagh last Thursday night.

“Walking the Camino was amazing. This time, I am going to walk and see how far I get before I have to come back to the office.”

Is that predicated on Leo ringing you to come back to work?

“Well, if I give him my secret number, my emergency number, for when I am away!” he joked. “If I can walk for a week, I’d be delighted. You just walk with your bag on your back. I will try to do 30km a day. I’ll sleep in hostels. One time we slept in an old cathedral.”

A few weeks after he returns, Eoghan will be doing a charity race against another Eoghan — McDermott of 2FM — to the Electric Picnic in County Laois. Secret numbers will be of no use here as Murphy’s boss Leo, a regular at the festival, will also be there this year.
