The nutritionist and former Miss World chats to Chloe Brennan about her favourite people, places and things
The Loves of my LIFE
The person
I have to say my husband, Wesley. We’ve just celebrated our twelfth year together and four years of wedded bliss. He’s my best friend and the first person I go to for advice or support. Plus he makes me laugh every day and my family absolutely love him too.
The memory
I was horse-obsessed as a little girl and dreamed of owning my own pony someday. My grandmother lives on a farm, and one evening she told me to check what was in the stables. She had bought me a pony and I’ll never forget the utter excitement of finding her there waiting for me. I was 12 years old and named her Molly. We had many years of gymkhanas, show-jumping competitions, pony camps and fun together
The moment of the day
First thing in the morning. I’m an early riser and love the peace and quiet of morning time, especially on bright summer days.
The song
I should mention my dad here, shouldn’t I? He wrote This is for Rosanna for me when I was born, as my birth was somewhat of a miracle, following serious medical complications. So it’s definitely a special one for me.
The movie
I’m not great at watching movies, as I can’t sit still for very long, or else I get too cosy and fall asleep. But I do love a good Netflix thriller or murder-mystery series. Recent favourites include The Alienist,
The Staircase and The Sinner.
The book
At the moment, I’m studying full-time for a master’s degree in nutrition, so it’s all big nerdy textbooks for now. But one of my favourite books is Perfume by Patrick Suskind.
The hero
My grandmother is my absolute hero. She’s 92, still drives, sends me emails, loves rugby, chocolate and a filthy joke. She’s had the most unbelievable life, from living in the Congo, to working as a spy in Malta during the Cold War, to running a hotel in Wexford. Her stories are incredibly exciting.
The outfit
My wedding dress will always be special, as it represents happiness on a day filled with family, friends and so much love.
The accessory
A vintage Gucci bag that my mum used to wear in the 1970s and passed on to me. It’s beautiful and I tend to admire it on the shelf more than I use it.
The gadget
My iPhone is always within reach, although I’ve trained myself this year to stop checking and using social media as much as I used to. My MSc course is very intense and I don’t have the time to play around with my phone at the moment.
The holiday
Our honeymoon to the Seychelles was the most memorable holiday of our lives. We went island-hopping, swam with sea turtles and tropical fish, saw dolphins, fed giant tortoises, explored by bike, and ate and drank to our greedy hearts’ content.
The hotel
Le Saint Geran in Mauritius. Beautiful scenery, delicious grub and, most importantly for us, the Mauritian people couldn’t be more kind, friendly and welcoming.
The pet hate
Sexism, animal cruelty, racism, laziness, rudeness, social-media trolls… the list goes on! I really find it difficult to understand how people can be cruel and judgemental online towards people they know virtually nothing about.
The piece of advice
Have the courage to live a life true to yourself, not the life others expect of you.
The beauty product
I’m a total SPF nerd and wear factor 50 on my face, neck, chest and hands every single day of the year, rain, hail or snow.
The part of my body
I’m lucky that my upper teeth have always been relatively straight, but last year, I wore clear braces on my lower teeth, as they were getting pretty crooked. I’m grateful for how well the brace worked and it’s made a big difference to me.
The hobby
I really enjoy staying fit and go to Pilates Plus Dublin classes a few times a week, and to trainer Jessi Kavanagh three times a week for weight-training. This has always helped me to stay focused and I love the mental clarity, strength and feelgood factor of fitness.
The smell
I love the smell of my dog’s paws in the morning. Is that weird? Ted sleeps on the bed with us and when he wakes up warm and snuggled-up, his paws smell of popcorn.
“I love the smell of my dog Ted’s paws in the morning. Is that weird?” “I’ve trained myself to stop checking my phone and using social media as much as I used to”
