Run to remember family and friends

A FIVE kilometre run in memory of lost loved ones will take place in Dublin’s Phoenix Park next month.

The Remembrance Run encourages people of all ages, abilities and fitness levels to run, jog or walk the distance while remembering a family member or friend.

Organiser Frank Greally will be taking part in memory of his late friends, journalist Con Houlihan, broadcaster Jimmy Magee and athlete Noel Carroll.

The event was founded in 2012 in Mr Houlihan’s memory and more than 5,000 people took part last year.

“Hopefully even more people take part this year because it is a lovely way to remember someone close to you. This will be the seventh time we have held the run and it has gone from strength to strength each year,” Mr Greally said.

“Families do it together or work colleagues often come along as a group to remember people close to them.

“When Con died in 2012, I felt we needed to do something to remember his life and this has been a fitting tribute.”

Anyone who does the run will be able to write the name of their loved one on a Wall of Remembrance at the finish line. They will also be given a candle and goody bag.

The starter on the day will be 89-year-old Irish running legend Harry Gorman, who has attended 15 Olympic Games.

Mr Greally said Athletics Ireland’s Daily Mile Movement will benefit from the event. The scheme aims to encourage young people to get active and run or walk for 15 minutes every day.

The Remembrance Run takes place at 11am on November 11. Tickets cost €20 and concessions are available for families. Further information is available online at www. remembrancerun.ie.
