Dave Chappelle sings in 37, Coolio on mic in Xico

-

Call me old fashioned, but there used to be a time, long, long ago, when superstars walked into a bar or a nightclub after their own show, had a drink and went home with the waitress/waiter. They were simpler times. Things, clearly, have changed.

Coolio was in Xico on Lower Baggot Street last Monday night after his show at the Bowery in Rathmines. He got up and performed his trademark hit Gangsta’s Paradise at Xico to the delight of the packed emporium.

Last Wednesday night, Dave Chappelle and Jon Stewart (with an entourage of 25) popped into 37 on Dawson Street after their sold-out show at the 3Arena. Chappelle got on the mic and addressed the packed bar. The American stand-up comedian also sang along to a number of songs to the excitement of the bar.

The previous night in the same venue, the Ireland football team dropped in after their defeat to Wales at the Aviva. You can safely assume no one got up to the mic to sing.

Not singing (though he does have a fine voice), actor Patrick Bergin and girlfriend Helen Goldin were in Rasam in Glasthule last Sunday night. Arriving at 6.30pm, the star ofS leeping with the Enemy and the beautiful widow of hypnotist Paul Goldin ordered the Early Bird, and were so engrossed in conversation that it was almost 9pm before they left. Helen must have enjoyed her meal because she will return to Rasam on Tuesday with a group of girls (early birds?) — 24 of them. I wonder if there will be singing?
