Shannon region crayfish plague warning
People using the River Shannon are urged to take precautions following the outbreak of crayfish plague. The outbreak was reported on the Al River, a tributary at Athlone. Testing confirmed crayfish were infected with a fungus-like organism that causes the crayfish plague. Anyone involved in activities in the two rivers should observe a ‘Check, Clean and Dry’ protocol. Boats clothing and equipment should be checked for any mud, plant material or animals before being thoroughly cleaned with disinfectant or hot water and finally dried.
