Shan­non re­gion cray­fish plague warn­ing

Peo­ple us­ing the River Shan­non are urged to take pre­cau­tions fol­low­ing the out­break of cray­fish plague. The out­break was re­ported on the Al River, a tribu­tary at Athlone. Test­ing con­firmed cray­fish were in­fected with a fun­gus-like or­gan­ism that causes the cray­fish plague. Any­one in­volved in ac­tiv­i­ties in the two rivers should ob­serve a ‘Check, Clean and Dry’ pro­to­col. Boats cloth­ing and equip­ment should be checked for any mud, plant ma­te­rial or an­i­mals be­fore be­ing thor­oughly cleaned with dis­in­fec­tant or hot wa­ter and fi­nally dried.
