Brexit has driven us all mad

- EILIS O’HANLON

Is there anything more endearing than a panel of political pundits pretending to understand Brexit? It used to be fairly straightforward. The Brits had voted to leave the European Union. Oh well, sorry to see y’all go, do keep in touch. Then it morphed into endless discussions about “backstops” and “backstops to the backstop” and “transition periods” and “draft agreements” and “partridges in pear trees” (probably).

Most normal people switched off long ago, until only the obsessives were left, driven increasingly mad as they tried to make sense of each new twist in the tale.

Now Fianna Fail is upping the ante by accusing the Taoiseach of letting the Brits off the hook by agreeing to a review process to decide when the backstop ends. Are Leo Varadkar’s critics right? Damned if I know. I’ll be damned if they know either, but it sounds good. The only rule on Brexit at this stage is that anyone who claims to understand it is either lying or, well, lying.
