Do the party season on a budget

e can thank Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele, for the explosion of sequins, lurex, lamé, bold colour and utter glamour that so pervades our fashion rails today. It has led to the dramatic revival of 1970s brazen sex appeal and 1980s love of kitsch and clash, all of which I adore. And now, with the

Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born movies in cinemas, I am in danger of OD-ing on OTT glamour ecstasy.

Thankfully, my habit can be fed from an affordable source — Irish online brand, iClothing. For the price of iClothing’s stunning pewter dress, left, you could probably buy one single sequin on a Gucci skirt.

iClothing is super affordable, its website is fast and easy to use, with lots of styled-up looks (available up to size 18) and free next-day delivery (on orders over €50).

As we head into party season and you are contemplating your options, know this — this is no year to be a shrinking violet.

If you can’t allow your inner Donna Summer (singer of I Feel Love; look her up) out this season, you never will. If Alessandro can be inspired by the flamboyance of a clashing-fashion-favouring gay man in his 70s (Elton John), why not choose a fabulous, beautiful icon that inspires you and channel her?

And I am telling you from experience — life is full of fashion regrets. I mean the risks you didn’t take, not the ones you did.

This is a season of plunging necklines, draped in undulating lamé, lurex, velvet and slinky, silky fabrics of every kind, in garments slashed high on the leg or down the arms. Then get yourself an eye-catching, body-comforting, sumptuous faux-fur jacket, and huge, dangly, sparkly earrings to complete your look of utter fabulousness.

Shoes-wise, although the ankle boot is great for the girl who likes her look a little edgy — and iClothing have loads — I think their strappy, high-heeled sandals are the business.

Our model reminds me of a young Michelle Pfeiffer in 1982’s Grease 2 (not a great movie, but Michelle’s style was) and also of Michelle in the wonderful 1989 movie The Fabulous Baker Boys, and that piano scene. She even wears the same kind of shoulder-grazing, OTT earrings that are so hot for this winter’s style.

iClothing is not only spot-on with all the trends at fabulously affordable prices, it meets our ordinary day-to-day needs, too.

But party season is the time to dress to play. Have fun and shine. And never regret.
