Government weighs ban on UK diesel car imports
THE Department of Finance is “examining options” in relation to a ban on old dirty diesels coming in from the UK, the Sunday
Independent can reveal.
The Government faced a public call from Nissan Ireland to do something about the enormous level of used cars coming in from the UK each year. Nissan said the solution to Ireland’s emissions problems was “staring the Government in the face”.
A spokesman for the department said that it had “recognised that the large-scale importation of used diesel cars from the UK over the past number of years was undesirable from a public health perspective and an Exchequer perspective”.
