Rachel McCormack’s Otranto

- In conversation with Sarah Caden

Otranto in Puglia is a pretty seaside town in the heel of Italy.

It boasts blue-flag beaches, and a very pretty old town for exploring.

I would stay in the five-star boutique Hotel Palazzo Papaleo.

Right in the old town, it has a roof terrace with a jacuzzi, and it’s only a two-minute walk to the beach.

I’d start Friday night with an Aperol spritz at Maestrale, a trendy bar in the small harbour.

Then I’d wander around the old town, stopping to enjoy a wood-fired pizza at La Bella Idrusa, then gelato from Martinucci.

Saturday morning would be spent at one of the seaside cafes,

with an espresso and an Italian croissant with crema.

Then I would take the coastal walk to the lighthouse of Punta Palascia,

which is the easternmost point of Italy. Over 8km, you pass medieval watchtowers and stunning little coves, great for a quick dip if it’s hot.

On Saturday night, I would head to Lecce, about a 40-minute drive away.

It is famous for its Baroque buildings, and the narrow alleyways of the old town are full of little bars and restaurants. L’Arzilla Furcina is a great place to enjoy traditional dishes with a modern twist, at a reasonable price.

Otranto is the perfect authentic Italian weekend destination,

but bring a phrase book, as little English is spoken. Rachel McCormack owns Saying it with Stone, which produces gift pieces carved in Puglian stone, with husband Giovanni. See amazon.co.uk/ handmade/ sayingitwithstone
