Viable historic grenade blown up

- Pat Flynn

AN army bomb disposal team carried out a controlled explosion on a viable historic hand grenade that was discovered in a shed in Co Clare last Friday.

It’s understood the discovery was made by a man who had been cleaning out a house that had recently been purchased. He found what has since been confirmed to have been an unexploded British Mills 36 grenade. The ordnance, believed to date back to the War of Independence, was discovered at the house on Station Road in Lahinch.

It is understood that the man immediately recognised the object as a grenade and placed it in the back garden before raising the alarm.

Gardai remained at the scene overnight and an army bomb disposal team from Cork carried out a controlled explosion after the grenade was removed to local GAA grounds yesterday.

It’s understood that the last occupant of the house, where the grenade was found, passed away about two years ago.
