Weekender Jasmine Hemsley’s Devon

-

I fly a lot for work, so I love that a weekend in South Devon just means jumping in the car. South Devon is a haven: limited phone signal, peace, quiet, fresh air. It’s also where Nick [Jasmine’s fiance] grew up.

We either make a base in Exeter with Nick’s mum or stay with friends on the edge of Dartmoor. Other good places to stay are Gidleigh Park, The Pig Hotel and Gara Rock.

On a winter Friday night, we’d get out of our city headspace, relaxing by the fire and ordering in fish and chips. In the summer, we’d head to Riverford Field Kitchen near Totnes, for the organic set menu, and then have a cosy pub catch-up with friends.

On Saturday, we’d get up early for a ramble on the moors with the dogs. We’d head to the Almond Thief in Dartington for brekkie, and then Totnes Town Market is a must.

Nick loves the sea, so we might drive to Hope Cove for a cliff walk, and then along to Bantham, for a swim or surf. The nearby Beachhouse is great for some seafood.

By evening, the fresh air has wiped us out, but if we’ve got itchy feet, we’d pop into The Live and Let Live Inn in Landscove.

On Sunday, we might head to the stunning Lympston Manor for lunch. Then, it’s on to Exmouth beach, before piling into the car, feeling refreshed, with some very sleepy dogs.
