Garda’s family suffer another loss

A family and community rocked by the death of a young garda in a hit-and-run incident 10 years ago have suffered another loss with the death of his brother, who was also a serving garda.

John McCallion (48), a father of three, had been on a leisure cycle and was found in an unresponsive state beside his bicycle close to his home in Swinford, Co Mayo, last Friday evening. A post-mortem was taking place yesterday to determine if death was from natural causes or from injuries sustained in a road traffic incident.

A decade ago his brother, Garda Robert McCallion, was on duty when killed in a traffic incident while responding to a call in Letterkenny, Co Donegal.
