CAB boss Clavin wins promotion

THE head of the Criminal Assets Bureau, Det Chief Supt Pat Clavin, has been appointed to assistant garda commissioner on an acting basis.

The appointment was made by the Policing Authority to fill a vacancy following the promotion of Anne Marie McMahon to acting deputy commissioner.

Mr Clavin was one of three successful candidates selected for promotion following a competition organised by the authority earlier this year. His appointment will become permanent in the coming months.

From Oldcastle, Co Meath, Mr Clavin has 38 years’ service in the Garda. He has been in charge of the Criminal Assets Bureau since August 2016 and has overseen its most successful year since it was founded following the murder of Sunday Independent investigative journalist Veronica Guerin in 1996.

The financial value of assets seized in a year jumped to more than €52m in 2019. During his leadership, the bureau has expanded to include the setting up of asset profilers in each garda division.

Mr Clavin was involved in the setting up of the Garda national immigration bureau as a detective inspector and as a superintendent he served in Cahir, Co Tipperary, and in Lucan and Blanchardstown districts in Dublin West.

On promotion to chief superintendent, he was in charge of professional standards and internal affairs and moved back to Dublin West as divisional officer before taking control of the CAB.
