COVID-19 DEATHS RISE ABOVE 1,600, NUMBER OF HEALTH STAFF INFECTED NOW 7,813

THE number of deaths from Covid-19 has surpassed 1,600, as another 13 people have died.

Figures released last night put the number of virus-related deaths at 1,604.

More than 31.95pc of all cases to date are in health workers, with the total number of staff infected now standing at 7,813.

New cases continue to decline. Seventy-six new cases were reported yesterday, bringing the total to 24,582.

Around 13pc of people with the virus have been hospitalis­ed, according to an analysis by the Health Protection Surveillan­ce Centre (HSPC) published last night. Of those, 392 were admitted to intensive care.

The HPSC breakdown shows that more women are contractin­g the virus than men, accounting for 57pc of those infected.

Dublin remains the most affected county, with 48pc of all cases, followed by Cork and Kildare, which each account for 6pc of all cases. Cavan is in fourth place in the list, with 815 people having tested positive in the county, accounting for 3.3pc of the total number of cases across Ireland.
