Ossie’s brother a fine sportsman

-

Sir — With reference to Eoghan Harris’s article in last Sunday’s paper relating to the Bennett family, Co Cork, I would like to add that Ossie’s brother George (not mentioned) was also a very fine sportsman. I fondly remember my late father talking about the many feats performed by George in various sports. He was an all-rounder, excelling in boxing, road-bowling and athletics (track and field).

George was a leading challenger to the late Tadhg Twomey who won 34 Irish titles in weight throwing, both distance and over-the-bar.

George was always willing to coach and train budding athletes in the local sports clubs. He was famous for his special homemade muscle rub. The secret mix (main ingredient poteen) worked wonders on humans and animals alike.

Also, Ossie was well known for his love of steam engines and his machines would be some of the main highlights of both the Stradbally and Upton steam and vintage rallies.
