MILK is what I normally say when I’m about to go out — that’s money, iPhone, lipstick and keys. I never thought I’d be adding mask to the list of things to check before I leave the house. Masks are now an everyday essential, and with them comes a host of new things to think about in relation to our skin. So, before you’re faced with any breakouts around the nose and mouth area, here are some of my tips and tricks for keeping maskne (mask acne) at bay.

Yep, maskne is a thing now, and, like most skin issues, prevention is better than cure.

I don’t know about you, but when I had to wear my mask to the hairdresser for the first time, I was a total sweaty Betty. That’s why minimal make-up and a breathable material are two things to consider. Opt for a tinted moisturiser, or, better still, use one with breakout-friendly SPF protection, such as IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream SPF 40, above, €39.50. This hero product lets you sweat it out, so to speak, when you’re wearing a mask for an extended amount of time. At night, use a calming face wash such as Codex Bia Wash off Cleansing Oil, €65. The calming oil rinses off as a milky emulsion, removing impurities and make-up, while leaving skin cleansed, smooth and hydrated.

Anatomicals High Noon For The Prune Dry Relief Balm, below, €5, brownthomas.com, is a handy, pocket-sized, multi-purpose product. It helps protect sensitive areas from friction or chafing when you’re wearing a mask.
