MÁIRE ÉILÍS NÍ FHLATHARTA

BOOKS: DONAL RYAN

I’ve read many of Donal Ryan’s books – The Spinning Heart, The Thing About December and recently, Strange Flowers .Ilove his characters and his ability to share them with us. I also recently finished Keelin Shanley’s memoir A Light That Never Goes Out (and yes, I cried).

ART: VANDA LUDDY

Galway has some wonderful artists, and I really admire Vanda Luddy and her stylish gallery.

THEATRE: FIACH

I really miss live theatre. I was fortunate that a local company, Fíbín, staged a drive-in drama called Fiach by Philip Doherty last August. It was wonderful from beginning to end — a blend of comedy and suspense playing out on screen and through a car radio. The whole set up, with a garda car chase and interactive phone calls, was so convincing I went to see it twice — first with my sister and cousins, and then with my teenage daughters.

FILM: WONDER

We often have movie nights at home and the dilemma is usually agreeing on one for the whole family. Firm favourites lately include Wonder, The Greatest Showman and, of course, Mama Mia! Love them all, even if I have seen them a million times.

MUSIC: NOSTALGIA

I used to pick out a CD, press play and carry on with what I’m doing. Now we have Spotify and Alexa at home, we jump from one song to the next, or one genre to another. I often shuffle a playlist from the ‘80s and love all the surprises — some songs I hadn’t heard since, evoking memories and nostalgia. My last live concert was The Script in March 2020 and it was super, their energy and performance were outstanding. I miss all of that, and applaud all the wonderful musicians for their efforts to entertain their fans online.
